I connected an old hp 120gb hard drive to my new computer through an external enclosure. The computer recognizes it but only the recovery section of the drive which is only 5 gb. Any idea how I fix this?

In XP,go to start/control panel/adminstrative tools.
Double click computer management/storage/disk management.
Right click the drive for options.
If you don't want the small partition, delete it.
Right clicking for options, you will need to create a partition
and then format it.
Formatting takes a while.
Once completed, the drive will be ready.

welcome to CTH sahrinlea

another trick to look for in that disk management gui as described by leroys above, is see if there is an area of disk (probably right next to the 5gb partition) if so, right click this unknown partition and see if you have the option to "import foriegn disk" - or something very similar.

this will allow you access to the data on the old disc if you require it, if not, you can blat both the data and recovery partitions into one big 'un.

Let us know how you get on.
