I am running win 2k. Yesterday explorer quit connecting to the net. Also wsftp will not connect to any sites. It gives me an error of network subsystem failure. I am on a lan and the rest of my machines work just fine. I can ping the other machines and see them in network neighborhood. I run avg daily so I dont think it is a virus problme. I am wondering if there is a setting in 2k that might disable explorer. OH by the way I am a classroom teacher and some students have access to other machines on my lan but should not have any access to my 2k box.
Thanks
eddie

I did not find anything here that was useful for my question.

Can you ping outside of your LAN? Are you using a proxy? Have you downloaded/installed anything around the time IE stopped working? Have a firewall, have you disabled it to test? No offense, but in IE on the File menu, workoffline's not checked right? Does 2000 have internet spades...can't remember, try seeing if it'll connect.

I have checked all of these. It will ping outside the lan. I have another machine just like it running right beside it. No changes to either machine. Only the one machine quit. They were both working I shut down the one that is not seeing the net and left the other one on. The one that was shut down did not let ie work when it came back up.

I did notice that under file and properties the protocal box has unknown protocal in it while the other machine has HyperText Transfer Protocol Could this make the difference and how could I change it'

If your on the computer that won't connect to the internet using IE, and you try to connect to a website and get the "page cannot be displayed" message and you go to file>properties...it will always say unknown protocol. So I don't think that's it.

Sorry I haven't found what your looking for yet, I'm looking and reading everything I can find out there.

What version of Internet Explorer do you have? Maybe you should try going to a newer version, or maybe even trying an earlier version to see if that works. You have cable/dsl or dialup? I'm guessing cable.

I am using 6.1xxsomething. I am using a t1 line...I have removed and reinstalled ie several times now. I still get nothing. I can telnet out to my linux box but no ie. :) I think I will just blow it away......

You've made sure your TCP/IP hasn't magically vanished and that the settings are correct. Have you tried repairing (updating) you connection? And that still doesn't help? Have you tried uninstalling TCP/IP and reinstalling? I've read of this happening to someone else running W2k, they said IE worked fine and then all the sudden stopped connecting to the web. They un/reinstalled TCP/IP and everything worked. 'Maybe' that will fix your prob.

I'm stumped right along with you on this one.
You might just have to blow IE away.
