I am having problems booting windows. The problem is this:
The computer boots all the way to the point where it shows the desktop background and then stops. If I do a Cntrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager, it does not show any programs running. I can then select shutdown and it works.
I have tried booting in safe mode and the same thing happens.
This problem began when I used Windows Update to download an update to Internet Explorer. IE kept crashing after the update, so I used Add/Remove Programs to 1st try to fixe IE, and then when that didn't work to revert to a previous version of IE. It asked for a reboot, and when I rebooted, I started having the boot problem.
I suspect that this is a registry problem. I found a similar problem on another thread and it was suggested to use the following DOS command "ren wininit.ini wininit.old" to rename the wininit.ini file. I tried that, but there is not a "wininit.ini" file, though there is a "wininit.old" file.
I might have to reinstall windows ME. I have a Toshiba Laptop, it does not have a sepperate Windows disk, but it has a recovery disk with windows on it. If I use that disk will it reformat my hard drive?
Sorry for the long post, but any help would be greatly welcome.
