Can i put a avi on a blank dvd with idvd and watch it on a dvd player? if so tell me how

Try ffmpegx.
Its just a GUI frontend, but I'm sure you can find the Unix utilities if you don't aleady have them.

Aint there a video option to put it on dvd, nero burner has got a video option to burn it like video (so it plays like a dvd when you insert it in your computer or dvd player) thats for pc i dunno if its compatible with mac...sorry mate

AVI is traditionally a very poor format for the Mac. And AVI2 is almost unusable on a Mac unless you purchase the special AVI2 decoder for quicktime.
