Backing Up Outlook Express Mail

I posted looking for help, without success, a few months ago on this same subject, then I had Win 2000 as an OS but have since moved up to XP Pro.

I have tried via the CTH tutorial to back-up my e-mail, but once again I can not get beyond the first step, that being, finding the location of my e-mail files. When I do the search for files or folders with a *.dbx extension the search reports " no results to display". There is mail in my inbox, and its sub folder and deletded items also.

I have "Outlook Express 6 xpsp1.020828-1920" installed. The only other program that is associated with e-mail is Outlook 2000, which is configured not to act as my defualt e-mail program.

Can someone offer any assistance?

Hi Robert - make sure that you can view hidden files and folders. If you have anymore problems, you might like to try this freeware utility OE Backup. Let us know how you get on.

Backing Up Outlook Express Mail

Thank you AnnMarie for the quick response.

I enabled the ability to view hidden files and folders but was still unable to search and find any *.dbx files, so, I followed your link to OE Backup and have downloaded the program. I will install it this evening and hopefully be able to backup my e-mail files. Once completed, I will post back and report the results, favorable I hope.

Once again thank you for the timely reply and your expertise.

You are very welcome Robert.

OE Backup has been highly recommended so I hope that it does the job for you.

Not sure of the status with the backup, but I whought I would add that under 2K and XP, the location of the Outllok Express email is located in

[b]c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\{alpha-numeric ID string}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Thought that might help for future reference.

PostCode: Thanks for the information. I did not know the location/path of the files. This info might come in handy in the future. Thanks again.

Sorry for omitting the method chosen to perform the desired back up. I opted for the OEBackup’s “Complete Clone Backup” program. It is an all encompassing backup tool and the installation/configuration proved to be a learning and confidence building exercise.

Once again thank you for your help.
