upgrading to ME
Not too sure which dept to put this question so I will try here first.
I have a comp with W98 - not the SE edition - and the only other specs I have for the comp is that it is 12GB - and when I try to upgrade it to WME I can get it to read the disc but then it says that the comp already has a compatible system on it and that to upgrade I have to use WME upgrade edition. I know that it is W98 that is on there and the disc of the WME just has the key on it but it does not allow me to even register it. Sorry if this sounds too vague; I am experienced enough with CT to know better but I am going through a lazy patch and hope someone will just say " hit that button " Thanks for any help |

If you're going to install a version of Windows over top of an earlier version, you need to use a disk that says "Upgrade" on it. Otherwise, you'll need to wipe the existing operating system (which is Windows 98), along with everything else from the drive and do a clean install of ME.
Since 98 has proven to be a better operating system than ME, you might want to reconsider installing ME. |

Thanks Miz. I am just using the comp as a base for doing shop accounts. I managed to put Office 97 on to it but I thought that office 2000 would have been better.
I can upgrade it to XP home ed but I don't know if there would be any greater benefit to that. Basically what I am trying to achieve is having a small comp in the upstairs office connected to other comps downstairs via a wireless router which will only be used for spreadsheets accounts etc and be able to access the other comps for relevant information about sales etc I came across a prog called Openoffice which does semm interesting and useful. I think that what I am worried about is if I spend all that time putting my accounts on an old OS when I do get the money to upgrade it will be so different that I will have to start all over again. Why wasn't I born rich and lazy and not poor, useless and lazy Oh well, back to the grindstone

I'll second Miz's advice about WinME, don't go near it! It's not an upgrade in the real sense, it's a pig compared to Win98/98SE. And don't worry if you decide to upgrade to XP later on. OpenOffice will run on Windows XP as well as Windows 98. As long as you keep backup copies of all your accounts files somewhere else (on another hard disk or burn them to a CD) you will still have access to them if and when you upgrade to XP because you can install OpenOffice on to the new system. Generallly speaking, almost all Windows 98 applications will run on Windows XP (I have yet to find one that doesn't), so your worries about not being able to use an essential program to access your accounts later on when you get XP are unfounded.
