~Hi
Hope you can help!
My computer freezes on a regular basis sometimes up to 4 times a day. Sometimes it is when I have multiple programs open like explorer, a media player and a word document. Other times the screen just freezes for no apparent reason.
Also, my clock has been having problems. It slows down throughout the day until it is about an hour off and then my computer will freeze. I don't know why my clock slows down. I tried to set up a regular "clock mantinance" so that it wouldn't slow, but that does seem to work.
So over all, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make my computer work like it used to. Thanks in advance.

Hi Nicole - welcome to CTH. The two issues may not be related. Re: your clock slowing down, its possible that your cmos battery may need replacing but this would not be the cause of your freezes.
There was an issue with an older version Norton causing the clock to lose time but in that instance, the clock reset itself to the correct time upon reboot. It would be a good idea if we had a look at your startups and see if we can identify a problem there first.
Go here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/startuplist.zip) and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread

Hi again Nicole, your startups look fine but I did notice that you have a couple of programs running that you dont often see.
One is Smart Card (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1999/Oct99/SmartCardPR.asp). This program uses up quite a bit of RAM. The other is MDM.EXE (Machine Debug Manager which is used to provide application debugging).
Do you use both of these programs?

Also:
CpqBootPerfDb = C:\Cpqs\Scom\CpqBootPerfDb.exe
Compaq_RBA = C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMPAQ\COMPAQ MESSAGE SCREENER\BIN\COMPAQ-RBA.EXE -z
Program Name: Compaq Message Server
Executable Name: COMPAQ-RBA.EXE
Required: No
Comments: Applies to CPQBootPerfDB below as well. These files generate some kind of server or servlet that attempts to connect with Compaq online. They are like Trojans, but fairly harmless. They send information on the "Compaq Advisor/Compaq Message Screener" application that comes with every Compaq computer and provide feedback on how computer users use the Message Advisor. These messages appear occasionally and instruct and advise users on their computer and its use. They generally attempt to get you (these messages) to connect to Compaq's website. They may be safely disabled via (1) MSCONFIG or (2) Start -> Programs -> Compaq Advisor -> Advisor Settings under the "advanced" tab. Not required and can cause problems
MOSearch = C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH. EXE
Fast Search in Office XP - similar to the new revision of the Find Fast feature in Office 2000. Fast Search uses the Indexing Services in Office XP to create a catalog of Office files on your computer's hard disk. As with Find Fast - a waste of resources.
Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs.

With the information you both provided, do you want me to delete those programs off my computer? Or do you want me to just take them off my start up list. Sorry to be ununderstanding, I just want to make sure I do everything right! Thanks.

Hi Nicole, Just disable them from loading at startup.
Click Start > Run > type msconfig and click OK
Click the startup tab and uncheck those entries. click apply/ok and reboot.
** For OSA.exe, delete the shortcut here:
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
