I have a lan setup between both win xp sp2 computers by an ethernet cable. Only one of them has internet access through dial-up. How do I get the other computer to use the internet through this one? (assuming that I am already connected)

Try going to start/control panel and run the network setup wizard.
Select connects through a lan and complete.

I do have it setup that way but I cannot get the internet to work on the other computer. Like if I open internet explorer it says "No connection to the Internet is currently available." "Work offline", "Try Again"

Are you using a router or 2 network cards in the main computer?
Or are they just cabled together?

I am just using a cable to connect them.

You need to setup ICS. See the link in this post. (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=754699&postcount=4)

BTW - You need a crossover cable, not a patch cable if you are connecting the 2 machines directly.

Well I followed the setup and it still doesn't work, it's might be the cable then. So how do I know which type of cable I have, and what's the difference between a patch and a crossover cable?

This is a straight through cable.

This is a crossover cable.

The typical ethernet cable sold is a straight through cable and will not work when connecting two PC directly.

cool, thanks for the help, i have a straight through cable :( . But I'm hoping for a router (and praying for high-speed internet) soon so now I know what to do, thanks.

Ok I now have a crossover cable, I followed all the steps for setting up the network, and I am still having problems. File sharing still works but gamming and internet sharing still does not. I cannot connect to either computer during a lan game and the internet doesn't work on the client computer.

What firewall are you running on the 2 machines?

On both i have the windows firewall disabled and on the host i have zone alarm. I added the client's ip address in zone alarm in the 'Zones' as 'Trusted'

-btw- scratch the internet through the UT2004 browser, those were just old servers left in the cache or something

------
I returned the crossover cable to best buy (extremely overpriced) and I ordered a new cheaper one from newegg, so I'm back to using the patch cable for a while. I shut down zome alarm and now the internet works for the client computer using the patch cable. File sharing still works but gamming over a lan doesn't.

Are you using ZA free or professional? Try disabling ZA and see if it works.

I am using ZA free and disabling it does make it so I can use the internet on the other computer. I am now using a crossover cable I got from newegg, sorry for the confusion.

Even though the internet works on it now, I still cannot lan across it. Either computer cannot see each other and cannot connect to each others ip, like in UT2004 it won't find it in the browser and when entering the ip in it, it doesn't connect.

Here are the connection details (Manually Configured):

Have you set up file sharing? See this doc (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=87C0A6DB-AEF8-4BEF-925E-7AC9BE791028&displaylang=en) for info on setting it up. (Make sure you have the 'Computer Browser' service running on the host machine.)

I do have those services running and file sharing does work fine. Both computers can see each other in the workgroup and share files easily, it's just they cant seem to find each other in when setting up a lan game.

is this only when the firewall is on?

They can share files just fine with the firewall on and off, but in games whether the firewall is on or off, they cannot find eachother.

What games aren't working and how are you trying to attach by name or IP address?
