Setting up WiFi, pls help

Hi guys,

I have 2 pc's, 1 of which has got a DSL modem so I'm happily connected to the internet :) My problem is that every1 wants to use the internet :P SO...I want to connect the 2 pC's via Wi-Fi network. What do I need for this mission? (ie: What Wi-fi equipment do i need and how do I set it up?)

:wave: What you need is a router that has wireless access built in - something like the Netgear WGR614 - this will act as your modem and also transmit a wireless signal that computers within range can connect to the internet through.

Your PC could be hard wired to the router (giving you better speed and also administrator access to the router)or not and all others would need some kind of wireless network hardware installing.

These are remarkably easy to set up, and despite what you may hear are fairly simple to secure from the outside - without the need to get into complicated encryption.

It would be wise to get the equipment before thinking about the setup as each manufacturer has slightly different spec.

I take it this means its an internal dsl modem inside the computer yes? This makes things tricky. The reason being is that in order to do wireless the best way is to use a wireless router. The easy thing to do would be to buy a wireless dsl modem/router. That would be one device so less setup and more stability. Then all you would have to do is setup the modem/router and plug any computers you want into it. For any computers you want to use wirelessly you would just need to buy and install a wireless network adapter. They make usb wireless adapters that plug right into a usb port so you wouldn't have to open the computer up to install it. Since you already have dsl service all you need to do is buy the modem/router and any wireless network adapters you may need.

I don't have an internal only external dsl modem. The other pc has got usb port... So all i really need to do is get the router(wifi) and an adapter for the other, correct.. ausome
