Every time I open Word2000 I get the Microsoft 'send error report or don't send' message. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software but it's still happening. I am getting desperate! Do you have any idea as to what is causing this problem? The other Office programs open OK. I am using WinXP. Thanks.

I too experienced a like situation with one of my programs. I have no clue as to what triggered the send report request prompt but was able to stop its appearance by doing the following:

Go to system properties via control panel, then open the advanced tab, then open error reporting, found at bottom of page, once there select disable error reporting. I also activated the notify me when critical errors option. Save changes with the OK button.

This stopped the appearance of the send error report request prompt when I opened that program.

Hi Nancy, have you tried the repair option in Word 2000? Click on the Help Menu and choose Detect and Repair. If that doesnt help, are you getting an error message before you are asked if you want to send a report to MS. If so, could you please post it in full here.

*Edit* Thanks Robert :D If you are not getting an error message, it sounds as though Robert's fix is the answer Nancy.

Thanks Robert, but, unfortunately, with your suggestion, I just got a slightly different error message. 'Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience'.:curse:
Clicking on the 'details' button that's displayed with this, I get an error signature and the option to view technical information about the error report - which looks like garbage.
I'll try your suggestion AnneMarie and see what happens. Thanks

Good luck Nancy. If it doesnt fix it, please post the information when you click on Details. We will need the full error message before we can help.

If AMs idea doesn't help do a search for "normal.dot" and note down the location you find it in.

Move the normal.dot to a different location and then load Word. It could be a corrupt normal.dot. Removing normal.dot will cause Word to regenerate one for you.

I have tried all the suggestions without success. However, I feel I must point out that I have tried System Restore for various dates and they all failed. I have a feeling there's something seriously wrong with my computer software.
When I first click on Microsoft's apology for the inconvenience I get the following error message:
' Error Signature
AppName winword.exe AppVer 9.0.0.2717 ModName: mso9.dll
ModVer:9.0.0.2720 Offset 00082f4e

To view technical information about the error report, click here

(Now here's the rub. The error message covers 50 modules followed by a thread that is interminable in length. To give you an idea as to how long the error report is - the scroll bar is so shallow that it is no more than 3 millimeters in depth. Impossible for me to type out.)

Is it possible that I may have to do a complete reinstall?

Hi Nancy - if you could post the first few lines of the message, that might help us e.g. winword caused and invalid page fault in winword.exe or whatever it says.

Thank you for your prompt reply

This is the only file that appears in the error report

'The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\Nan\LOCALS~1Temp\WERA2.tmp.dir00\appco mpat.txt'

Hi Nancy, I've done some research on your problem. It seems that appcompat.txt is an error file generated by the compatibility mode of WinXP when a program crashes unexpectedly. It sounds as though something is amiss with your OS.

It might be a good idea to uninstall Office again and then run a repair of your WinXP installation and then reinstall Office. Instructions on how to repair WinXP here (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)

Well I did the repair installation and chaos now reigns. The errors are still there, Norton System Works seems to be in trouble and my broadband network has disappeared. I tried to set up a new connection, but nothing happened. I am using my laptop with a dialup modem (ooh it's slow!)

I really think I'l have to do a completely new install. Thanks for your help and patience.

Awww, I'm sorry Nancy. I have not heard of a repair causing those sort of problems before. :(
