Hi folks I'm new to the board. I figured this would be a great place to post my computer questions

Oops, I hit the enter key by accident.
Anyway I'm running win 98 and I suddenly started getting these error messages that say "command complex library error"
Especially when I try to print. Then it tells the program has performed an illegal op. and will close. Then I can't print! Also my puter has been acting a little strange also, like associating the wrong icons with programs.
When I do a ctrl-alt-del it will tell me an app called initComcom is running. What the heck is this, where did it come from and how do I get rid of it. Short of hosing my HD.
Thanx
Jim

Already tried that.
But thanx for the reply.
I might just hose the HD. And install the OS on my new HD then transfer the files over.

Yeah. You're right if I hose it all will be gone. I'm a little burnt out over this whole problem.
Now I can't even get MS Word to open without that stupid error message. And now photoshop won't open either.
I'm going to install a fresh copy of either 98 or xp on my new HD, then use the existing one as a slave to access any files I may need.
But thanx for all your help.
Jim

hmmm

when did this start anyway?
is it more than four days ago?

you could try the good old scanreg /restore from a dosprompt
(restart to DOS, and then type scanreg /restore, hit enter. use arrow to select older date, and after it's done it asks to restart.)

if that don't help, one can try a few things with tweakui (powertoys by microsoft)

Yes it was more than 4 days ago. I went back the 4 days and hit enter in the scanreg /restore window and that didn't help. I've heard of tweakui, but I'm not quite sure how it works or where to get it. I also tried the repair office utility on the office cd, but...nada.
Thanx

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp

here are some repair tips
wrong icon and file associations and such
a few snips from this here link...
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/repair.html

these are run from start >> run
Problems with Active Desktop

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dllRestore standard file associations

rundll setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\shell.infWhen the Wrong Icon is Displayed

To refresh the icons in the system change the size of icons in Start - Control Panel - Display - Appearance, click apply then change the size back.
The size of the icon cache is stored here in icons. This is the default. Increase this if Windows often shows the wrong icon or no icons.
REGEDIT4[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer]"Max Cached Icons"="4000"

Thanx jt. I'll try some of that stuf.
I ran a virus scan last night ans I found a bunch of trojan horses and worms on my HD (getting rid of them of course didn't fix the problem though). But what exactly does a trojan horse or a worm do? Actually I think I've had them for a while.
Thanx
Jim
