If it has an extra monitor connection, then the answer is probably yes. But I'm not a Mac user so I couldn't say how.

Most laptops come with a D-sub15 output - ideal for attaching an external monitor. I use one constantly at work with my IBM T42, though I have the luxury of having a DVI output on my docking station.

Most laptops will toggle between screen setups by hitting Fn + F7.

Like oracle, I am unable to offer advice on Macbooks, as Apple is a foriegn country to me!

I have a MacBookPro.. the MacBook essentially has the same ports, and the OS is the same. You can simply plug in any monitor with a DVI connection to the MacBook (or any recent Apple laptop) and then configure the second monitor via System preferences > Displays. That's all there is to it. No drivers needed.
