I am trying to connect two computers to dsl via a Etherfast Cable/DSL router. The first computer runs Win ME and has had the dsl connection in place for some time without problem.

I then bought the router and tried to add a windows xp mashine. The windows xp machine (p3/800mgh) works just fine and it was from that machine that I was able to configure the router.

When I connect the Win ME machine to the router then the Win ME machine begins to have problems - none of the applications will launch (except Opera 6.5???). When you try to shut the machine down at that point you get a program not responding window but the area where it would have designated what program is not responding is blank. If you disconnect the ethernet cable from the router the machine boots up and all applications run fine. If you take the router out of the equation the machine will connect to the web just fine as well. It's when the router is added between the modem and the machine the conflict occurs.

The ethernet card in the Win ME machine is not a brand I recognize. We tried another Ethernet Card (TX?) and it didn't make a difference. I have contacted Linksys and gone through troubleshooting steps for the router but they do not feel that is the problem. They feel the problem is the Ethernet card in the Win ME machine or the PC itself. I have looked at all the device settings for this machine and disabled any extra network adaptors but I do not know how to check the IRQ settings to see if there's a conflict.

It was also recommended that I try a Linksys Ethernet card.

Any advice?

Thanks!

What are all the network settings for the ME machine? You can get most of them from the Network Utility in the Control Panel - look under the Identification Tab, you might find that you have both computers with the same name. The names must be different and the workgroup must be the same for them to see each other.

Would that make a difference? The machines aren't networked together the router is just assigning them an ip address - we don't do any file sharing. I'll check and post that information anyways. Thanks for the input!

I have found the computer and workgroup names for the Win ME machine but don't know where to look for the XP machine. Any advice?

xmickeyx-

In XP, open your system properties, there is a Computer Name tab there. If you have My Computer on your desktop, right click on it, then select Properties. If you don't, go to Control Panel and Open the System Icon, if you are in Classic View. If you are in Category View, click on Performance and Maintainance, then click on See Basic Information about your Computer. (I hate category view)

Hope that helps for now.

I didn't want to do it, epsecially since I didn't know if it would work. But I restored the computer back to factory condition. I did lose all my file but nothing I couldn't replace. Thanks for your help.

The simplest way to get the network configuration information is to open a command window and run "ipconfig /all". I'm not 100% sure that this is available on ME, but I know it is for all the other flavors of windows. So, I assume it is there on ME.

Another thing to look at when you have both machines connected is what the router thinks it has for DHCP clients. I don't know the linksys router, but that information should be available through its admin interface.
