I have a "this page can't be displayed" problem. For example- when i access hotmail, the hotmail page appears followed very shortly by the page can't be displayed message. Obviously the page can be displayed because it was displayed before that darn message showed up. This occurs with other pages besides hotmail. how can I fix this. HELP!!!

Hi pleyden - welcome to CTH. What browser (and version) are you using?

Try this. Close IE and go to Start > Run, and run the following commands one after the other, each line followed by 'enter':

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. Now reboot.

Lets us know whether or not this helped

Hi,
I tried your fix- I entered the commands you sent me, and after entering them all, I shut the computer off and turned it on again. When I accessed hotmail again I still had the problem..This error occurs not only on hotmail, but on other searchs as well. My wife tried to get LL BEAN and we kept getting that error.

Hi Peter - do you have a firewall installed? If so, which one?

I clicked on tools/internet options/security and checked the security level of the internet and it was medium.
By the way- the computer didn't always have this problem. It is a recent occurrence.

Hi again Peter - did you see my previous post. We both replied at the same time so I'm not sure :)

They are - McAfee Firewall-Full Downloader and Norton Personal Firewall 2002 4.0 for Windows 9X, 2000,xp.I do have norton utilities installed, and also have a pop-up killer installed-Guard IE Ad BlockingPrivacy Suite& Pop-Up Killer2.3.2 .

Hi Peter - jeepers, its not a good idea to run two firewalls. If I were you, I would uninstall one.

Go here and download and install Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). When you reboot, use it to disable your firewalls, popup killers and ad blockers and reboot. See if you can access the sites now. If you can, enable the proggies one by one until you find the culprit.

Hi AnnMarie,
I tried to install the "Startup Control Panel but that *$@#% page appeared and kept me from downloading. I guess I can try downloading the EXE version, but I'm not sure what "extract the executable wherever you want" means. As you can probably guess I am a novice at this computer game

Hi Peter - see if you can download it from here (http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL.zip). Its a direct download link.

Re "extract the executable" etc message, your unzipping program is just asking you where you want the file to be unzipped to. Choose your Desktop or Browse to find the path to your Desktop and then just doubleclick on the .exe and it will install itself.

www.microsoft.com, under Support and the knowledge base, has an article on this problem. It says you may need to export the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControllerSet\Ser vices\Winsock2 key from a PC running Win2k onto a floppy, then import it into the registry on the Win2k registry of the machine that is experiencing this problem.

In brief, the WinSock2 key may be corrupted.

I also repeated the Regsvr32 probes given above with no gain. Now I guess I need to find someone who will export the identified regisltry key from their working Win2K machine and send it to me so that I can see if that makes the difference.
