Hi everyone!
You were so helpful last time that I thought I'd throw another problem at you before calling a crappy tech support line.

I have a Netgear router (which I bought to solve this very same problem with a different router). Turns out the router must not have been the problem.

I set the router up and everything was working fine. When I woke up the next morning, the internet said that there was no connection. Everything was hooked up just as it had been the night before. I did the following things:

1. Unplugged and re-plugged every cable. (One to computer, One to modem, One to XBox 360, and One to my laptop)
2. I shut off and restarted the modem AND router, just as the router manual told me to.

Nothing worked, but finally I dinked my way into the solution. I took the one plugged into the WAN port and the modem...and hooked it up so it was plugged into the WAN port and the "1" port. Then, I plugged the one from the PC into the modem port. After a short while, the "Internet" light on the modem lit up orange (the first activity I had seen from it since the night before). So I hooked the router up as it should have been before...the internet light went green and everything was A-OK.

I have NO IDEA why this worked like it did. But now it seems that everytime I leave the computer for more than 5 minutes, I have to reset it in this way. Also, it doesn't always work the first time.

I'd like to know if you guys or gals know any way to keep my router happy and my internet connection CONNECTED! I don't want to have to mess with it 5 times a day, and I shouldn't have to either. Why can't anything just work?:rotflmao:

I have all Windows XP updates...and router firmware updates as well. Is there anything that does need to be done on a regular basis to maintain a connection? Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have a cable or dsl internet connection? Do you know what you have the MTU set at in the router?

If you're referring to the light on the modem that indicates the connection to your ISP, then the issue is unlikely the router, but rather the modem itself or a line problem.

Your ISP can check line levels as well as other line issues right over the phone.

If you log into the router there should be a setting for MTU. The default on most routers is to have it set to auto. You can change it if you like. Most cable connections do well with the MTU set at 1500.
