Pc to Pc file sharing

I want to be able to move my files from my laptop to my new computer, but my new computer doesn't have an internet connection yet so i cant upload them to a file sharing site. When i connect an Ethernet cord from my laptop to the new computer they both show the LAN 2 connection is trying to establish an connection, but it never does and says it has limited or no connection.
the same happened when i used a crossover cable.
can anyone point out some hints or a tutorial?
they are both Windows XP

New Computer: Media Center Edition

So both computer do have an ethernet adapter but the one isn't on the internet yet right? You may find a usb transfer cable easier to work with just for tranfering files.

the exact same thing is happening with me. trying to transfer large files using an ethernet crosover cable but cant select the "create a direct connection" option on the new notbook and getting limited or no connection sign.

edit:: sorry didnt mean to hijack anthing. just got excited at the prospect of a solutuion.

dont really need to be hijacking someone elses thread when you already have one. the solution for one may not work for the other and might even cause some problems.

Use a external hard drive or if they have blue tooth use that :D
