Okay, so I just got my parents to upgrade to DSL via AT&T. It's the same service my room mate and I have, and it's convenient, plus I've set everything up once already. Should be an easy set up, right? Hah.
Okay, here's what we're using
- 2wire 2701 HG-B Gateway, equipped for wireless connection
- Two D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G122 USB Wireless network adaptors
- Two computers running Windows 2000 with all service packs installed
I also pulled my dad's office laptop for wireless testing.
Here's how things happened.
- Hooked DSL modem into the wall
- Installed the first D-Link into my dad's computer
- Eventually had to delete the default profile and manually reconfigure things with the SSID, but got the signal up and running fine.
- Registered with Yahoo/SWBell/Next-big-company-purchased
- Internet is running nicely on my dad's machine. No worries.
- Use dad's office laptop to test wireless connection. It connects without a hitch, and both computers run the internet simultaneously without issue.
- Install D-Link on my sister's machine, and it picks up the signal easily.
- Even though her computer has a signal, there is no internet connection.
- I check the configuration settings. Everything says the D-Link is connected to the 2wire.
- I check network connections, and I see that she's sending packets, but not receiving anything.
- I curse a lot.
- I check IPConfig in the command prompt, and her IP isn't anywhere remotely close to the available range from the router.
- I go to the router settings on my dad's machine and pick an IP within the range, and get the DNS.
- I also input the MAC address from my sister's D-Link into the router's 'Allowed' list.
- I go into my sister's network connections and manually input her IP address, subnet mask, Default Gateway, and DNS
- Again, nothing happens.
- I curse a lot more, and possibly offend the neighbors
- I do all the manual and automatic stuff again, only this time experimenting with different settings on her TrendMicro firewall, and also with TrendMicro completely shut down.
- I do the same thing with other possible interfering programs shut down.
So after all that, I still can't figure out what's going on. I know the D-Link adaptors work, and I know the 2wire can support multiple wireless signals. I think it has to be something in her computer settings, because I couldn't even get a connection off of one of the unprotected signals in the area (it was the most convenient way to test). I've been in and out of the 2wire settings, and the Win 2k settings, and I haven't been able to find a problem like this in any other web forums. The only other thing I could think of was that the D-Links were interfering with each other, but that's why I manually assigned an IP. My sister's computer is simply not getting any signal back from the 2Wire.
I'm on the brink of turning some hardware into the filling of a hammer-and-pavement sandwich, so thanks in advance for anyone with advice, and who also put up with the long post.
