I have my main PC which has working DSL through an inboard modem. I had its ethernet card connected to my laptops ethernet port with a crossover cable. This setup was working until a few days ago when it suddenly stopped (I know I must have done something, but nothing comes to mind). The home PC is running XP home and the laptop is running XP pro.

Solutions Tried:
I tried rerunning the network setup wizard many times, and everytime it gives the "an error occured while trying to setup. try again or try manually".
I tried manually, but am not exactly sure what to do. If I try and check the 'share this connection' for the DSL connection, I get error 1003 "the connection cannot be shared". If i have automatic IP getting checked, I just get limited connectivity after it fails to renew the IP when I click repair. The only way I can get around the limited/no connectivity is to put in the IP/subnet I get from ipconfig on each computer.
I think the windows firewall/ICS service is broken on my PC, and my laptop doesn't have it as far as I can tell. By clicking on 'windows firewall' in the bottom of the windows security alerts it says the service is not running and I should click to start it. Then it says windows cannot start it. I tried some 'netsh sock reset' or something like that (I cant remember exactly) and that didnt fix it. I have no firewall running.
I tried winsockXPfix and ipconfig /renew on both computers but that gives something about a DHCP error.

Im pretty much a novice with a sloooow connection (often less than 1 kbps, though this is unrelated to the problem) so it takes awhile to search for fixes. Ive been at it a few days now and these are what Ive tried as best as I can remember.

here is my NSW.log
