Any Ideas??
I changed my cable high speed modem last week and every time I restart the computer I have to unplug the power cord to the modem and then plug it in again(and then the router). The router worked well for a year and a half before upgrading the cable modem . Now the Linksys router keeps dropping the connection. Finally gaveup and will buy another, tried everything with the Linksys support. exchanged the cable modem , the cables etc. I have read that many poeple are having this problem with Linksys. I have a BEFRS41 v3 .Does anyone have any suggestions. (It is a hardwire.)

I'm not sure for a solution to stop the connection terminating. But instead of you unpluggin the power cord to the modem and then plug it in again.
Is there not software that came with the the router? that you can use to activate the connection?
Or maybe go to network conections > and enable the connection ?

no software. I will try the manual again.

Try going to control panel > network connections > and enabling the connection.

Linksys was very helpful. 3 times on the phone and 3 re installs /updates etc. Problem persisted. exchanged cable modems and cables. nothing has helped, so now I thought I would get another router (is it necessary as a firewall , I only use 1 computer).

It isn't 100% mandatory to use the routers firewall, however the hardware firewall provided by a router is much better than a software firewall. Much better than the Windows built in firewall or even Zone Alarm. A new router might do the trick but I'd like to see what the computer gets for an ip address when the connection is not working. Next time the connection fails go to Start/Run in the run box type cmd then hit enther. Now in the black box at the flashing promt type ipconfig /all and post what it says in here.

The router worked well for a year and a half before upgrading the cable modem . Now the Linksys router keeps dropping the connection. Couple of thoughts, everything worked fine until you got a new modem, since then you have to reset the modem and router to connect. You didn't specify the type of connection (dsl/cable) but if I remember correctly, both types of modems need to be configured correctly to work. I wonder if there is an incorrect setting in the new modem.
My other though is that most broadband isp's use mac addresses for access , since this is a new modem, you may need to call up the isp and have them plug in the mac address of the unit.
Sorry you have a cable modem, I missed it first time around.

Well it has only dropped the connection once since yesterday, since I used the easy link to set it up. (now that I ordered a new one) I will try all these suggestions out as the need arises and keep you posted. thanks again. Razz.

Hello bAdWaYz,
I saved a screen shot of all the info yu asked for but do not know how to paste it here?

So that screen shot is what it shows when the connection drops out? Seeing as how things worked fine till you put a new modem in the mix that would be the place to look I'd think. Did you clone your computers MAC address in the router? That may help but seems to me that would be an all or nothing sort of problem. In other words if that were the problem you either wouldn't get any internet at all or it would be working fine. Seem like its either something bad in the new modem or a line issue. I have seen a few times before where the actual cable drop outside the house had water get in and it caused connection issues at random.

yes I cloned the address and I changed the cable modem. I changed all cables except the main cable coming into the house. That is why I thought the next move would be the router. Is it possible the new cable modem is sending too much info and the router cannot handle it?
