You may have to install any IE upgrades or critical updates before you can upgrade to IE6.

make sure you are still connected to the net when you run the installer as well as the above.
Personally i'm sticking to ie5.5 as 6 just completly mucks up my comp.

Hi dammit - I dont know if this will help or not but you might like to try downloading IE6 and following the instructions here (http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html).
If that doesnt work, can you tell us what components cannot be installed?

lol...thanks Dammit :D
Try this, run a search for advauth.cat. There may be more than one but the one you are looking for is in the below path.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\advauth.cat
When you find it, rightclick on it and delete it and then try installing IE6 again.

Hi again AnnMarie...I found the Item you referred to..and deleted it...ran the IE6 setup again....this time it went past the usual 90% didn't throw up an error...but just said "the following items where not installed"...basically all of it!!!!...tried to run it again and got the original error:no:
Are we going to let this thing beat us???
I will now go down the pub for a few pints...and hope I can see the keyboard when I get back:rolleyes:

OK, this could be tedious for you but if you really want IE6, it could be worth a shot.. Delete advauth.cat again and then this time, install all the service packs for IE 5.5 and then try IE 6.

Before I do.....and I will take your advice on this one...is it worth the effort?...You don't sound too keen on IE6?...

I didnt mean to give that impression. I like it well enough but, to be honest, I can surf just as well using IE5 on my other PC. I guess it depends on what your needs are. The other aspect to consider is support from MS in terms of security updates etc.

Hi dammit - FZWG just posted this:
"Some time after posting this issue, came accross a way to reinstall IE 'fooling' Windows (a gentleman called TonyKlein came up with this goodie):
"Fool Windows by convincing it you're running an older version of IE/OE, and editing the version info:
Go to Start > Run, and type Regedit.
Drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.
Doubleclick the 'version' value in the right pane in order to bring up the Edit box, and edit it to read 5.50.4807.2300
IE Setup now thinks it is running IE 5.5 SP2, and you'll be able to run IE setup and either reinstall IE in its entirety, or (and I haven't tried this personally, but it ought to work as well) select "Install Minimal or Customize Your Browser", and select Outlook Express."
BTW, Tony know his stuff so its worth a try if you are still keen :D

Hi agaim dammit - I found this on Microsoft Newsgroups in response to the same problem that you are having:
This worked for me, and other people have tried it with success, with IE6SP1 and WinME:
Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer as in the file management program).
From there go to C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information. Right click on the Uninstall Information folder and select Properties. Uncheck the Hidden box and then click OK or apply. A confirmation screen will come up. Select the Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files button. This will unhide all of the files in the Uninstall Information folder. You then need to move (not delete) all of these files to another folder that is empty. Any one will do or make a new temporary folder. It doesn't really matter just as long as the Uninstall Information folder is empty. Reboot your computer.
After rebooting double check and make sure that the Uninstall Information folder is empty. You should then be able to install all of the troublesome components

Hmmmmm....It was all going well until I opened internet explorer folder only to discover there is no uninstall info in there
This is what IS in there:-
1033 connection wizard plugins signup WK2 DW15 fixie HMMAPI.DLL IE4.DLL IEDETECT.DLL IESETUP.CIF IEXPLORE SUPPORT
ohhhh...and 1 hidden...could that be it?? and if so ..how do I get at it??
Another afterthought......since all this has been going on...I seem to be getting frequent errors in WINNINET.DLL.....could it be related????
AnnMarie

Hi dammit - the way that I read the fix is that ALL files in the Uninstall Folder should be moved to another folder but not deleted. Have another look and see what you think. The steps to see all hidden files are also described.
Re your WININET.DLL problems. Yes they could possibly be related. WININET.DLL is a Windows Networking file. We would need to see the exact error message to be more helpful though.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!:D
AnnMarie...what can I say....you are a genius....and will you marry me?.....ohh I seem to remember I asked that one before...lol
I couldn't see the uninstall folder the first time I tried...so went to control panel>folder options and clicked show hidden folders...went back to IE folder and there it was......

I have been having the same problem with IE6 SP1....it gets to about 83% and quits. So, I dowloaded Mozillas Firefox and it works great. You might want to try this.
