I'm writing a Memory FAQ for Cyber Tech and would like to ask the moderators and users here to please submit their questions to this thread. As it stands, this is what I am starting with. Some of these may go though. These are some of the questions I have found elsewhere on the Internet and some are just hings that popped into my head. What I really would like is some feedback from you.

What is memory and how does it work?
What type of RAM do I need?
What is the difference between Buffered and Unbuffered memory?
What is the difference between Registered and Buffered memory?
What is the difference between ECC (Error Correction Code) and Parity?
What is the difference between Parity and Non-Parity RAM?
What is CAS Latency?
What are Data Damping Resisters?
How does SPD (Serial Presence Detect) work?
What is the difference between FPM (Fast Page Mode) and EDO (Extended Data Output) DRAMS?
What is DDR SDRAM and what is the difference between SDRAM and DDR SDRAM?
What is RDRAM?
What are banks?
What are Nano-Seconds?
How much memory will my operating system support?
How much memory can my motherboard support?

Again, some of these may just go or be combined with others. Let me know what you think though. Any and all feedback is very much appreciated here. I hope to have this completed within the next month, or two at the very latest and up here for everyone to use.

A common error that people make is to think that System Resources, as reported by windows, is the same as total RAM memory. A distinction between RAM and system resources would be nice. Further...how, exactly, resources occupies a small area of memory....

Boards that take SIMMs or DIMMs..which do I use? Both??

Do I populate banks randomly, or is there a particular order to follow?

Do I need heat spreaders? What are they for?

etc etc.

What is Kernal Memory and what exactly does it do?

What is Static RAM?

With so many different kinds of RAM out there, how do I know which type is right for my PC?

How much RAM do I need?

I want to install more RAM. Do I need to configure anything?

What is RDRAM? And why is it more expensive most other kinds of RAM?

A question I see a lot.

"I have 512mb ram, but I only show 380mb free. What is using the rest?"
