What would be considered the safest "free" bulletin software out there that is php based?

phpbb is probably the widest used. But any free bb software is going to have holes in security.

Yeah, I was kinda wondering if there's a page out there that might show comparisons for the security of such bb's, I've tried looking but couldn't find anything that really compares them, unless I'm looking in the wrong places.
I also realize that "mods" may be added to beef up the security, but it's nice to think bb's creators already think about such problems.

I've heard good things about SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/), but as stated most, if not all will have a security issue somewhere. If not in the coding, then in the way you have it setup, with file/folder permissions, upload permissions etc.
The pay for boards such as vBulletin and Invisionboard are usually more secure as they have techsupport and userbase to combat problems quickly.
If you want to try invision board then checkout invisionfree.

Iwas looking at the SMF set up and it does look rather interesting, to me it looked better than phpbb. I like the concept of Invisionfree, but you don't get complete control over it, and the version is kinda dated.
