Is it possible in Word '97 to create an index that refers to paragraph-numbers instead of to page-numbers ?

If you use a TOC (Table Of COntents) then it should work if you use the correct styles.
e.g.
Heading 1
Heading 2
Paragraphs

haven't done that for a while.
Try looking at the Word Help files.
Search for TOC.
