Help With Patch

Hey guys i need help with something i was instructed to apply a patch to a program's root directory and i have no idea how or even where to start any help is appreciated thanks

What kind of file is it, .dll, .bpl, .exe, etc. The root of a directory is the very top folder in the directory. For example, if you needed to install a patch to the root of a MICROSOFT/OFFICE/OUTLOOK/EXPLORER directory, the root would be in the MICROSOFT folder, in other words, you don't drill down inside the directory.

It's an .exe file and the instructions say to apply it to the root directory of the program

Actually i just figured it out thanks alot for your help cause i had no idea what any of that terminology meant hahah i'll know for next time i guess though THANKS AGAIN!!!
