Hey

I'm looking into buying a new pc with with Windows Vista Home Premium? Which processer is best to go with and why? AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core or an Intel Core 2 Duo or an Intel Pentium D Dual Core. Also does any one have any opions od Dell pc's? Any advice would be good.

Cheers
Baz

i would suggest (depending on your budget) a dual core processor, any will function well, but i believe that the C2D have better performance than their AMD rivals.

Hp's and gateways are the way to go, dell's aren't the brightest crayons in the box. intels are ok, if you won't a work horse that can handle heavier loads then intel go with amd.

as i mentioned in another post, my pentium 3 runs things a p4 can't handle.

avoid the Pentium D
its hot, power hungry and based on obsolete technology

The core 2 duo is usually a bit better than amd athlon x2 but it's really not going to make a huge difference.

Personally I hate Dells due to their non standard parts but if you never plan to upgrade the PC then I suppose Dell are OK.

If you are in the UK I recommend Evesham - their machines are built using standard parts and their after sales support is excellent.

Personally I have one of each. No difference for my usage. What do you when you are on the computer, alot of heavy duty gaming or just general purpose?

what is this?
according to benchmarks on
www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com)
and
www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com)
Intel Core 2 Duo/Extreme performs significantly better than the Old Pentium 4 series and all AMD Athlon Series
AMD's Best CPU, the FX62 (think they are at FX74 now but you need some special motehrboard)
is beated by Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 (which costs like 1/2 the price of the AMD AThlon fx62)

If you want pure performance Intel core 2 duo
If you are on a low budget AMD Athlon 64/X2 series
If you are on a super low budget or want the cheapest comp you can find
Intel Pentium 4/D, AMD Sempron or Intel Celeron

If you are just gonna be surfing and downloading music and the like, I would just get an AMD setup (S939) based around an X2 3800+ with 1GB of ram and a 7600GT. Thats even more than enough that what you are using it for. Going C2D would just be a waste of time and money.

first consider the performance and cost between the processors
if you see an amd, and a core 2 duo for less $
consider the perofrmance between the two
if the amd is better go for that
if the core 2 duo is better, then obviously go for that
also you must consider the cost of the motherboard
the rest is pretty much the same

Building a DDR2 system is going to be more expensive than a DDR system. If he went C2D, he would need a new motherboard, new ram (DDR2), new CPU (obvoiusly), and possibly a new PSU.

Socket 939 will be phsed out
AM2 is the new socket
AM2 and Socket 775 (for core 2 duo) both use DDR2
go witht he DDR and 939 if you want
the way i see it, DDR RAM would end up like SD RAM costing $70 AUD for a 256MB Stick... give it a year or two
