How could a piece of software control the speed of a fan when the fan controller wire isn't plugged into anything?

Voltage control. for instance my MB (abit AW9D-MAX) comes with about 5-6 fan jacks on the MB, 1 4 pin for the CPU and the rest are 3 pins. my mb also comes with a overclock utility called uGuru wich will control the 3 pin fans along with the 4 pin fans. i could technically plug the cpu fan into one of the other 3 pin plugs to control it. but then my MB wont boot up:hmm:

A motherboard can't control the voltage that the power supply outputs, and the power supply has no way of determining what hardware is plugged into what 5v lines. Could you imagine what would happen if you tried to "voltage control" your fans, and it lowers the voltage on your hard drive and optical drive lines instead? Unless your motherboard itself has 4-pin fan sockets which it can control with custom software, or you otherwise have some hardware between the PSU and the fan which can be controlled with software.

sorry guys im still learning my p/r/q's. gargamel, the fans are 12vdc(brushless) induction motors.high resistance in the motor windings will cause it to slow down or even just stop. the extra fan ports should be no problem to say if your power box has enough wattage to handle the extra "load" . if your using all you can get out of you power supply b/c of all the hardwear you have youll need a higher wattage power box. hope i helped? squid
