I'm trying to install the driver for a Radio Shack USB-Serial
cable model 26-183.
I have the CD, ran the .exe file successfully. Restarted
the computer, plugged in the cable to the USB port, Vista
goes through its "found new hardware" routine, it failed.
I tried going through the Control Panel add hardware wizard
using the CD. It failed.
I downloaded both the .inf and .sys files for this device
from the Internet onto a CD, went through the "found
new hardware" automatic routine and the "add new hardware"
process. Both failed.
I copied both files manually into C:\Windows\System32\drivers
and restarted the computer and went through the same
drill. Failure.
I use this cable for a 3-pedal footpedal for my work.
Help.

are the drivers you using for winxp or vista? Sounds like you do not have vista drivers available for your footpedal

It's the USB-to-serial cable that needs a driver,
not the footpedal.
These new laptops don't have the old male serial
port, so I bought a Radio Shack 26-183 USB-to-
serial adapter. It worked fine on XP, yes.
When I run the CD, the driver says it installed, but
Vista is still not finding it (the driver), SERWPL.INF
or SER2pl.sys, that I copied into System32/drivers.
I don't understand.

if the drivers you are using are for winxp, it may not work for vista. where did you download the drivers from?

Here for the .exe file that didn't work.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?summary=summary&techSpecs=techSpecs¤tTab=summary&custRatings=custRatings&features=features&accessories=accessories&productId=2036258&support=support&tab=support
Here for the .INF that didn't work.
http://www.tramsoft.ch/downloads/pharos/USB-Drivers/Windows98_ME/SERWPL.INF
And I don't remember for the .sys file.
I finally got this machine online. I'm not finding anything like this
at the Microsoft support site.

the first driver is was made available july 06, the second driver is for win98 and winme.
IMO, neither will work with vista. You may need to get a new cable unless someone else here knows a better solution.

I actually bought a new foot pedal, USB instead of serial. And I
have an XP machine the cable still works on.
Ah well. I'm thinking of wiping this new computer clean and trying
my hand at Linux, maybe Red Hat of Ubuntu.
Fun, fun, fun.
Thanks.

Hello!
I try to install that same usb to serial cable from radioshack drivers as same as you done I found as same as you found that links, I write a email to radioshack to have help, I try to install the drivers at 1 windows XP professional, 2 windows xp home edition and 1 windows 2000 profesional computers and none works, but I will tell you something: I had windows vista home edition at my desktop compaq computer and I was using the usb to serial cable from radioshack working perfectly, I remember how easy I install the driver it was as easy as install a printer or scanner the BIG problem is that I dont remember if I install the driver from the same vista drivers preintalled or I download the setup from radioshack site, from the same links you wrote at your post, but it works on windows vista, I will hard working thinking how I was installed the driver in to vista, if you knows how to install into windows xp professional please tell me, because I have already make the same steps you do to try install the usb to cable driver. take care...
