Do you got Windows XP and are you going to use Windows XP on your laptop?

You might be instrested to use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard".
You can start the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard by clicking Start on the computer running Windows XP, pointing to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then clicking Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

If you got a router where the 2 computers are in the same workgroup you can make on the laptop a new folder and share it. then from the other computer copy the file's to the new folder, if you don't know how to post that, Please tell me and i'll post it here.

I'm probably missing something but here is the obvious-What about burning all your files to a data disk or just putting them on a USB stick and then doing the opposite with the laptop.

That will not go on the simple way, As i, a network manager does use professional image software from Symantec named Ghost to install pre-ready custom installation's on network clients. The best is to burn your file's on a DVD-R or CD-R.

As redapple says cloning a windows XP system isn't easy and Windows would need re-activation again because of the different hardware abstraction layer. As for moving files from XP home to pro or vice versa there is no problem.
