I have a main computer hooked up to a wireless connection and everyone in the house has a laptop that uses a wireless card. Yesterday we lost the connection, the main computer still works but the others don't we have tried to choose the repair connection and it says that it cannot and we have to renew the ip address. Can anybody help us we have no clue!

Hi jackieb93, Welcome to CTH!
Click Start > Run > type winipcfg and click OK.
Choose your adapter from the drop down list and release and renew.

an error box pops up and says, " Windows cannot find 'winipcfg'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search." I don't understand how ip addressses work. Do you have to be assigned one by and internet provider? When I installed my wireless card I was automatically hooked up to the internet and had no problems until now. Why did it work then?

What Operating System are you using? If Win2000 try typing wntipcfg instead.

windows xp pro. I went to the comand prompt and typed in ipconfig/renew and it comes up:
Windows IP Configuration
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network connection 2 : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
I don't know what it is, would it be with the main box? But the main computer still works. Can I just type the ip information off the main one to my laptop?

do ipconfig /all and have a look at the time on the DHCP lease to see if it's been able to connect recently

It works now, as far as I can tell it was a physical problem. We started unplugging and plugging in the cords and stuff, we thought by chance that this might work and it did. I think something wasn't plugged in all the way or something. Thanks for everyones help.
