Added a few more distros to the poll. Made it sticky....seems like a worthwhile thread to have at the top.

After getting Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9... I have installed both and love Mandrake.
Had MAJOR problems with RedHat. It would mess with Windows bad. THe last time I installed it was the other night. It completely wiped Windows 98 out. Somehow it messed with the bootloader so badly that it wouldn't boot 98 at all.
So I reinstalled Mandrake, got the files I needed off 98 and reinstalled 98. Then reinstalled Mandrake and all is fine now. No problems other than lack of Knowledge with Mandrake, but I'm working on that one.;)

I use Red Hat 8.0 and 9.0
I love them both.
And I do not have a problem with them, except neither like my Omni View 4 port box.

I have to vote for Knoppix as it's the only one I've used so far - (thanks to Dodge for the link at AT a while back - I finally got to burn the Knoppix ISO and it's pretty neat so far).

I've voted Mandrake. 9.1...simply because it works. I'm far from a Linux expert. I'm still getting used to the differences. But, it's running. Even if I had a hard time getting it to work.
I like it, I don't love it yet, because I don't know how to use Linux. Trying to find how to use the different applications is a big problem. Opening a file if you don't know what with can be frustrating at first. But in due time i'll probably get the hang of it.
After all, patience is a virtue :D

One of the ways you can play around in Linux, learn as you do it, and not 'muck anything up', is to create an account that you can tinker around in. That way, you don't upset anything in your own personal account or even more critical, the root account.
Also, another good source of linux experience is to find a users group (aka LUG) in your area. Some groups have learning sessions, install fests, and lunch and learns.

OK, for some odd reason the idea of an "install fest" does NOT sound weird/hilarious. I can actually imagine a bunch of people really enjoying this. I could never understand why most people are so reluctant to install their OS again. I know I enjoy a good format every so often. :p But up till now, it's only been Windows. And it's getting a bit boring. Linux does leave a lot of room for some tweaking and tinkering :)
You just gave me a great idea. thx :thumb:

I have tried several different versions of Linux, like: SUSE, Mandrake, Knoppix, Red Hat, Morphix, Debian, Lycoris, Sot, Gentoo, and Slackware.
I like Knoppix best with Mandrake a close second!
If you want to try Linux out you can't beat the Knoppix 3.3 Live Disk!

Hmm, I would have to say that Knoppix is by far my favorite, simply because it comes with me everywhere, and I can use it whenever I am forced to use a windows computer (not the os). But, since Knoppix is based on Debian, I'd have to say that thats my favorite distro, so that's what got my vote.
However, the webserver I run used RedHat until we were forced (by the *powers that be*) to reconsider. They were constantly adding restrictions on what our server could do, and that was getting quite annoying. We asked them what we needed to do, and that basically was prove to them that our security is at it's max. Due to the confort of the other members of my team and others close at hand if we have a problem, we opted to go with Mandrake, because of it's easy update facility, and security settings, which are even now throwing unexpected loops at us. But, it's overall going well -- if you ignore the fact that X Windows doesn't work yet (i'll post more on this when I get to work and have the specs at hand).
I'm glad to be here, this forum looks like one that I can stay on and rely upon to not vanish after a few weeks, or disregard me because if my age and (relative) inexperience.

Welcome Eko....
We're glad to have ya aboard, no matter what age and experience, we're all linux-heads here and fairly friendly too. I myself have been to other linux forums in the past, even a very very popular one (I'm sure you've found it already...LOL), where they immediately say "read the damn manual" or treat newbies like simpletons. They often forget that they were once newbies too.
Granted, Linux does require one to read more manuals and help files than Windows does, but here everyone seems to support the "point me in the right direction method".

the only REAL distro is debian. red hat is for people who want to think they are better than windows users;) i choose debian for its rock hard stability, excellent all around, and anyone who has ever used their APT-GET program will agree with me that is it THE BEST program ever written

I finally went for Mandrake 9.2. Fairly happy with the whole thing so far. It is a bit bemusing sometimes but I guess I will learn given enough time.. :)

Nah. :P It's close to impossible to see that for questions on popular support forums like linuxquestions or linuxiso. Or here.

I wish I could get knoppix to run on this machine. Problem with the vid card. Detects it as a SIS 305, but in mandrake I have to manually set it to just SIS. Not sure why. But, knoppix wont run due to that problem
I haven't had any problems with Suse live cd, Phlak, and a couple of others I've tried out.

Well, SuSE is the only one that truely works on my system. Fedora/Red Hat will not install. Mandrake installs but has issues (no sound). I haven't tired Slackware because I did not want to go through with the tedious and boring text driven installation routine.
SuSE works flawlessly for me.

I've yet to play with the Gentoo distibution. Isn't it based on the Debian distro?

It's completely from-source. I don't think it's based on anything in particular.

debian all the way! A b*tch to install (doesn't seem much different than an old 94 distro of Slackware I have), but you only do it once :) Apt-get is by far the best package/dependies manager I've ever used.

Aaarg!
I have changed my mind, Had mandrake installed but will be changing to Red Hat this w/e as our local lug is running an installfest and I can resolve some hard ware issues. Mandrake was going to kernel panic when I plugged in my usb wireless adapter. ;)

I've never found a better distro than slackware. I have boxes with RH, Mandrake, Slack, and have used deb and Suse as well. Slackware is my choice of Linux. FreeBSD is my choice for a Unix server. A little more Unix/Linux literate, a whole lot more flexibiity and stability. A whole lot less bugs in Slack than distros like Mandrake. That and I cannot stand urpmi or rpm's in general. Source compilation gives better results in my opinion. At least that is my experience. I do however run Mandrake on a laptop. The wife likes it.
Thanks

Slackware! Easy to compile, lovely sourcebased. Alltho, I'm making my own distro, with LFS. But since that one isn't ready yet, I'll just go for good ol' slack. :)

I vote slackware v.10 since its the only distro I've used so far. I'm a complete linux noob so i'll be posting alot. I'll be trying SuSe after I get slack figured out.
