I have a 14400 Sportster US Robotics modem, I cant find a driver for it anywhere. Ive been to the USR web site but they did not list it. Can I somehow download the driver off my old computer and put it on my not so old computer?

Hi there Olddog, take a look at DriverGuide (http://www.driverguide.com) and you'll find the driver download you'll need.
It is possible to copy drivers from one PC to another in many cases, but I wouldn't bother with the free availablility of drivers on the 'net, especially for a winmodem (which your's may be).
To copy from the lod PC, you would need to look in device manager to see exactly what driver files the modem is using (only really user-friendly in W95a) and copy each file and make a not of it's location to floppy and copy back into correct locations on new PC.

Hi there,
Your windows95 should already have the driver you need in its driver library. Go to Add New Hardware, Don't let windows Search, you choose to do the Search by checking No. Then choose Modem, Don't let windows detect it...you want to choose the Driver. Find US Robotics, then the driver, then install it.

I think you would be better advised to find a cheap but faster modem. If $$ are an issue check around at computer surplus stores for a good used one. I think you will find that a 14.4 modem is just too slow for effective and enjoyable surfing.

WOW, three responses and all different :)
I agree with Lynnm here, upgrading the modem would be a good idea but if you stick with the 14.4 you need to be sure it's not a winmodem (which many USR Sportsters are) before using Add New Hardware as you can not use the hardware wizard for winmodems. (Sorry Junky :) )

Thank you, I will be working on this Tomorrow, BTW I found another (bigger)USR modem a 8130 is that one any better? I bought some old used computers hoping to make something of them, It's kind of fun never worked on the other side of the keyboard before!!

Unfortunately, you will usually find with PC equipment that bigger = older = worse :(
8130 is not a valid USR model number as far as I can tell so I can't be sure what model that one will be. It could be a 33.6 sportster ISA winmodem which are quite large.
Need much more info. Tell us any and all identifying marks/numbers on the card and we'll try and figure it out for you (and point you to the tools we use to dod so so you can learn how to do it as well).

"Add New Hardware as you can not use the hardware wizard for winmodems. (Sorry Junky)"
My instructions was not for a win modem, but only a ISA modem. Did they make a 14.4 win modem? Never seen one if they did. Only 14.4 USR I've seen are ISA. But I don't get around much. :D

OK, Im not sure if this still falls in this catagory but I still have a similar problem. Last week I Partitioned and formatted my computer, Then I installed my OS (win 98) and word 2000 office. Things were not working like I would have liked. Upon booting I kept getting a memory conflict error. So I decided to start all over, I reformatted the primary partition but was unable to format the extended partition and found myself pretty well FUBARed. I had no way of contacting you guys So I decided to take the Hard drive out of my old computer and put in the new one. Everything worked out ok the driver reqonized it was in a new home with new equipment, and through windows I was able to reformat the other Harddrive, now I have two drives in one computer pretty cool eh? My problem is now is I still have no driver for my modem which is (according to my computer) now a USR 56k voice int, the model number is 484, I also have USB and a OPL sound card that I have no drivers for (my window 95 USB driver does not work on it). So this is where I am now, I've been to USR but no luck.

Here are two places to find drivers: www.cybertechhelp.com/pages/drivers.html (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/pages/drivers.html) and www.windrivers.com (http://www.windrivers.com)
