How do you play Half-life 2 online?

I recently completed half-life 2 story mode and it was nice. Now i want to play against others, is that possible, there's no multiplayer option in the main menu, just start, load and options etc etc.

I do not really know yet, I got Counter Strike and Condition Zero and Condition Zero Deleted Scenes, And Half Life 1. I do not really know if that is possible - If its not in the menu, Then it doesn't exist.

Do you have steam installed ?Then maybe you can get Half-Life 2: Deathmatch I think it comes free with HL2 (I't not very good and not many play) also I think you get a new add-on Lost Coast

Get steam here If you want or don'r have.

you cant play online with any pirated copy

when you isntall half life 2 steam will be automatically isntalled
to play online i th ink you must register the half life 2 cd key with your steam account

Yeah you will need to setup a steam account, Then add the HL2 cd key (can only be used on 1 steam account). Once HL2 is activated on steam, HL2 Lost Coast (Very short 1 level), and HL2 Death Match (Online multiplayer) will become available for download. I think you get Day Of Defeat : Source aswell.
You will need to download them all through steam.

Once you have it, if you don't know, Go Games (at the top) > Activate a product on steam. Put in your HL2 key and it should show up in steam, aswell as some other games.

Half life 2 does not play online,counterstrike source does.
It should be included with your halflife2 disk.

you should be able to play something on line with the Half Life 2 Discs you bought, i know i did and my friends did...

I think HL2 get's you the whole HL2 based games, Like HL2 Death Match, HL2 Lost coats, DOD Source, Counter strike Source. My steam accounts got them all activated, But I bought mine off trademe so not sure.
But I know that 1 of my mates bought Counter Strike Source of steam, And it came with HL2 death match, HL2 lost coast and Day Of Defeat Source.
So HL2 should come with atleast those, Maybe not Counter Strike SOurce.

Basic HL2 gets you HL2, HL2 Deathmatch, HL2 Lost Coast and Codename Gordon for the one price. DOD Source, CS Source, HL Source, HL Source Deathmatch and other Steam games cost extra. But there are some bundles you can buy to get several combinations of those games, such as the Collector's Edition or Game of the Year edition.
