Okay, have had this Gateway MT3705 for almost a week.
Between no drivers for Vista, the unfamiliar menus for
settings, having to re-download plug-ins, I have had it.
I don't like it. I want XP back. (I never thought I would
hear myself say that.)
Would appreciate step-by-step instructions for how to get
rid of the factory-installed Vista and installing the XP from
my OEM XP CD, you know, format C:, et cetera. (Yes, I
have a separate license).
Thanks in advance.

Howdy:
Is your OEM XP cd for any particular system?

CD says "Windows XP Home Edition" Version 2002, Includes
Service Pack 2, not for any manufacturer, like Dell or HP or
anything like that.

Good..
You should be able to just boot using that cd and wipe out the entire Vista partition..

Do you have a link to a site that could guide me through
this process? I used to wipe my 98 machine every six
months or so, but I've never done it on one of the newer
systems.
Thanks.

Okay, if I don't get an answer to this related question,
I'll post a separate thread. Never sure about that. :)
Anyway, if I do this, delete the partition, wipe out Vista,
install XP, and then decide later I want to try Vista again
after all, will I be able to do it from the recovery CD
I got with my Gateway? Or will I need to buy Vista
separately like I did the XP CD?
Thanks in advance.

The Recovery cd should do it, but to be on the safe side, I would contact Gateway and run that by them.

You should be able to install it right over the top of XP.
It will ask if you want to save you XP files to a folder.

don't forget to wipe the mbr.
vista's boot manager will stop you from booting into XP when it's installed unless you clear out the mbr.
(this drove me nuts for 2 days, heh)
