I would think that you cpu is the bottleneck there and after so much you won't see much inprovement in Fps no mater what card you use.

example:
I had a 3.06 and a 9700pro put in a 7800gs and seen small gain in FPS, upgraded to a E6300 and same card I get now about 50% increase in FPS,well maybe not 50

Faster cpu and faster video card is always the way to go It all comes down to how much $$$$ you have to burn The never-ending cycle

though id rather you get the Intel Core 2 Duo
which is not the Intel Pentium 4 or D or what ever

the Core 2 Duo performs significantly faster than the Intel Pentium series

If your gona get like a Pentium D, or whatever, better to go single core. Single core's will play older games faster than a dual core, as the older games arent multi threaded and only run good on the top end dual core's like core 2 duo's. A single core Athlon 64 will be faster than most dual core pentium D's
