my computer will not play any .avi video files. the only way i can listen to auido is with real player but it wont play the .avi files. when i try to play videos the sound and picture are playing faster. it playes about 3 sec of video in 1 sec. i cant use windows media player for anything.

More than likely, real player has associated itself with all the audio and video formats. Open real player and look through the options and locate the 'associations' list. uncheck everything but the real media files.
Then open WMP and locate the associations list. associate it for .mpg, .avi etc...
