I know I'm not the only one that has googled "dual boot vista" for the past week and not find a simple step by step. I am not at any level an expert and everything here I have learned from trail and error. There is some information here I was frustrated in not being able to find. Like being able to create a dual boot using a upgrade Vista disk.
This is only a method I used and it proved successful.
I do not recommend just anyone follow these instructions. Like I stated I am not an expert and my computer may ignite in flames at any moment. This is only the method I used and it proved successful for my computer. I used the Full Install version of XP Home and the Upgrade version of Vista. Please exercise caution should you decide to follow my method.
1. Back up all your stuff!
2. Dig out all your install disks for drivers and stuff.
3. Restart your computer with your XP disk in the drive. If your computer works like mine it should begin to boot up on the windows install screen.
4. Format your drive and partition the drive into 2 drives. I made one at 20gb for XP and 50gb for Vista.
5. Once that is done choose the drive you want to install XP and follow the on screen instructions.
6. Blah blah blah windows does it thing.
7. While windows is going(just sitting there staring at the desktop) insert the Vista disk. I have the upgrade version so this may now work the same for the full install.
8. Once vista begins DO NOT CHOOSE UPGRADE. Choose clean install. Once you do this it should give you an option to pick one of the partitions you created earlier.
Everything after this you should just follow the on screen directions.
When you go to restart now you should get a screen that asks you to pick between Vista and Previous versions of Windows.
Please everyone feel free to add or recommend changes as it may not go this smooth for everyone as it did for me.
