just wanted to give my views of vista so far. I recently installed both ultimate and premium.

My logitech webcam pro 4000 will not work, my network printer will not work on the network but it will work through usb, quake4, doom3, and simcity4 will not install ( had not had time to see if theres updates to those software). Partition magic will not work, gimp has problems, Dreamweaver mx will not work. Lost my Linux bootloader.

Had to take linux off of another laptop and reinstalled its oem winxp (pre sp1) so I can use dreamweaver. Going to reinstall linux as dual boot.

Vista boots faster but it takes longer to get online.

Otherwise no problems. :D

The fact that your devices won't work is obviously not a fault of Vista. It could also be argued that the same is true with the applications.

I find Vista boots considerably slower than XP Pro used to. I also don't find it particularly any more responsive than XP Pro used to be.

I'm not a big fan of fancy GUIs, and I am completely lost and cannot fathom the logic behind the revamped Windows Explorer.

With all that said, I like it, but I'm not sure why.

Lost my Linux bootloader.

Always gotta remember to install MS OS's first, otherwise grub lays the smack down! ;0

After reading all the different posts on vista, it sounds like it's a pile of cludged together pile of garbage of epic proportions! Only a lucky few are able to actually get that think installed and working properly out of the box. And I dont even want to think about the field day hackers are going to have with that thing over the course of the next few months.

I hate to have to say it but from the looks of things I'll convert completely over to Mac and/or Linux before that thing ever touches my harddrive!

At this time Vista is like any other new operating system, there will be a lot of software and hardware that will not be compatible with it. That is the cause of my problems. If you purchase a computer with it already on it, most likely you will not have any problem at all unless you try to install old software/hardware on it.

Every new operating system has had this problem the first year or so, even back in the days of dos. I actually like Vista. In general, if I do not count the incompatible stuff, I am having no problems at all.

That said - if Linux was more media compatible, I would switch completely over to it. But at this time, Linux is way behind in the areas of dvr and and other video/multimedia stuff.

Renegade;

That argument doesnt fly with me. I can understand there being bugs in a new OS, especially one as complex as Vista. I'd even accept the occasional "woah, didn't see that one coming!" type of quirk. However, with the number of bugs that almost everybody is reporting it sounds more like THIS should have been the beta version and not the final. Add to it that they've been working on this thing for what...2 years now and with the price they're charging, it's just unacceptable in my book.

Agreed

Agreed.

IMHO did we really need to introduce ANOTHER OS. XP Pro works fine for me.

I'm not sure whether I actually prefer Vista but on the whole it looks impressive and I've yet to find any conflicts.

*Touches lots of wooden things*
