why do you need 2 routers?
you have 1 router and one or more switches
then to the computers
your 1mb connection wont slow down unless mroe than 1 computer is using the internet at the same time
also depends on the servers speed

You can only connect one modem to your phone line. Now if the modem is also a router then you can connect multiple computers to it. If it is not also a router then you'll need to connect a router or switch (a router is a better choice) and then connect your computers to the router.
But, the bottom line is one phone line can only have one networking device (modem) connected directly to it.

If each computer is going to have it's own modem you'll need 2 IPs from your ISP, otherwise only 1 computer at a time will be able to access the internet. In which case a router is a much better solution (and cheaper in the long run as most ISPs charge about $5 per month for additional IPs whereas you can get a router on the low end for about $25-30) b/c even though you'll pay for a 2nd IP you'll still be sharing the same bandwidth (unless you have multiple phone lines and can have a separate account for each, but some ISPs won't let you do that for a residential account anyway).

alright but the router is beside my home computer and the computer with vista i am getting will be upstairs so it would be easier to connect a router upstairs(connection to phone line upstairs) then half a connection going all the was from downstairs to upstairs. anyway i see what you mean i will need to connect upstairs pc to router downstairs and it qill split connection speed when both computers are connected and if that is too slow then upgrade connection speed

yes if you have 2 computers using the internet at the same time they will share the connection you can't get around this. I would suggest getting a wireless router to replace your non wireless so you can just connect wirelessly with your computer upstairs without the hassle of getting a long enough cable to go down to your downstairs router.
