View Full Version : Exporting Address Book

I just got my new motherboard installed and now I am going to have to reinstall windows to get it working properly. My question lies in the problem that I have all whole bunch of e-mails messages that I would like to save and I would also like to export my address book.

1. I do know that there is a export function in the address book but it is greyed out. How do I access that function?

2. E-mail messages must be stored somewhere on my computer. Where are they hidden so I could copy them.

3. Will the file and setting transfer wizard on the WinXP disk transfer both of the previous items?

As Always help is much appreciated. :)

Hi seer_claw - I dont know why your Export function is greyed out but perhaps you might like to try OE Backup here (http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/index.htm). Another member here used it very successfully.

I am currently using Outlook not outlook express. The site indicates that the backup is only for express. So that will not work for Outlook.

Microsoft's site has not given me indication of how to do this either.

Sorry seer_claw, I assumed Outlook Express (and we all know what assume is an acronym for :D ) I'll see what I can find out for you.

BTW - what version?

Ok.. I have found two links that might help (depending on your version of Outlook) Have a look at this article by Microsoft first How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195719) then check out this download Outlook 2002/2000 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup (http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/pfbackup.aspx).

I also found out that the Import and Export function may be an option that has to be checked during the install. It seems that running setup again and checking it, may enable the function.

Outlook 2000 version 9.0.0.2711

Thanks for the quick responses and I know the feeling about assuming. I did the same to one other member tonight.

Thanks AnnMarie. I now have all my e-mail messages backed up.

Now to get my address book backed up. The export and import function is still greyed out and I did try reinstalling the function off the Office 2000 CD.

I have taken the long route in transferring all the addresses to my hotmail account. It took a long time and was a slight pain. Is there any other way to do this?

Also can the file and transfer settings wizard in WinXP do this?

Thanks for the help.

Shaun

Hi again Shaun - I'm at a bit of a disadvantage here as I dont use Outlook however, I read through the instructions in the link that I posted and it seems to me that all you have to do to backup the address book is to copy the file and add it to your profile on another PC. Can anyone confirm (or otherwise please).

I also havent yet used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It might do the job but I'm not sure. This (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/tips/gettingstarted/transferwizard.asp) article was all I could find on the MS site.

THe site that you gave me worked perfectly for backing up the e-mail messages. I followed the instructions for finding the *.pab file (the address book) but it was not found. So either WinXP stores it as something differently or I am doing something wrong. I will continue to try to get the export/inport buttons working.

THanks for the suggestions though AnnMarie, I really appreciate them. :)

One other question that might help.

What are chevrons? On the link you supplied it is a term used there but I don't know what it means.

Hi again Shaun - chevrons are the double v's on the Menu indicating that it can be expanded. I just found this (http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/olconpab.htm#plan3). It looks like, depending on what mode Outlook is running in, you may not have an address book to backup.

Thanks for the help AnnMarie.

It is the problem that you pointed out. I don't have an address book in my current settings. I will have to remedy that later. For now I will have to manually move the e-mail addresses.

I appreciate the help. :)

I don’t know if you fixed your problem but you can get your outlook address book by looking for *.wab and *.wa~ of just look in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\”here is your user name” \Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

you can copy does files and the restore them to your new (sys)... you could rename them if you change user name.

For you email, look in: C:\Documents and Settings\”here is your user name”\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\”some identities number????” \Microsoft\Outlook Express

I hope this will help

Thanks for the reply p805. Exporting the e-mails was easy to do. I did not have a problem doing this one. Next time I have to do this I will remember to look in the first place that you suggested.

I found a *.wa~ file so I will be able to copy it for next time.
