I'm definitely no expert when it comes to networking, but this problem just seems ridiculous... perhaps its possible though? Allow me to explain.

My friends and I have a wireless network set up for the internet in our house. This computer, and an xbox, are the only two systems physically wired to the router. Other than that, we have another desktop (which I'm simply going to refer to as "Karl" to ease confusion), and a laptop that connects wirelessly.

Now, the router is a linksys wireless g with "speed booster". "Karl", uses a linksys mini usb adapter to receive the signal from the router.

The problem we're having is that when we connect to xbox live, our connection is absolutely horrible, if someone is downloading something on "Karl".

I never thought this type of thing could have an affect on other systems, and indeed... it is only affecting the xbox, but I still find that strange. We know it has to be this "karl" computer, because our room mate that uses it is always downloading something, and if we simply pause or cancel the download our connection on the xbox jumps right back up in the snap.

Does anyone know what may be causing this, and what possible solutions I might try?

If you have a router with QOS then you can set limits for bandwidth usage.

hi sorry if this is "leeching off of someone elses topic," but i had a question for you degsy, i have a "Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station | MN-700" and i dont see anywhere with QOS, would it be right there in front of my face or can i type commands into command prompt because i have never heard of this and it would be OF GREAT USE to our entire family because im always downloading and it completely hogs our bandwidth so i would like to "partition" it so i can only use a maximum of a certain amount so their internet will not be laggy, they just do email and stuff, nothing bandwidth intensive but they get mad when it takes 2 minutes to load msn.com lol, we might not have this feature because our router is like 4 years old but weve been looking into getting a new 100mbps wireless router soon so ill make sure i find one with QOS capabilities

any suggestions for how to get my router to do this currently?

Unless it is a feature of the router or included in updated firmware then it will not be available to you.

It is a relatively new feature for "home" routers.

Here is an example
