Hello to all. Very nice forum here. Lots of info to take in. I found this forum while searching for the answer to a Netgear WRG614 v6 wireless router problem.
My problem is I am trying to add a wireless network to an existing wired network. There is a Westell 6100 dsl modem that feeds into an 8 port switch. That switch feeds 3 wired XP computers downstairs and 1 wired XP computer upstairs that acts a server.
My question is,
If I put the wireless router upstairs,
Do I need to set the modem as a bridge and let the router be the DHCP server
or can I just put the wireless router in upstairs with the line from the switch and plug the server into the ethernet port on the wireless router.
Thanks in advance for all replies.

Your router has 4 LAN ports and one modem port.
You can replace the switch with the router and enable
DHCP on the router.
You will have to setup port forwarding in the router setup
for the server.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is I need the wireless upstairs and there is no recption through the cement floor. I am having problems putting the wireless in past the switch. When I do the router gets an address, but it won't hand one out to the laptops. Anybody??

You can try putting the wireless on the switch via a LAN port turn off DHCP on the wireless router let the modem deal with that (Also you don't want 2 devices handing out IP's) .

Thanks for replying. I set the router upstairs with a static address. The wLAN is given a 192.168.2 network address from the wireless router while the downstairs is given a 192.168.1 network adddress from the modem( Westell dsl+2). From upstairs I can ping all address on the network (wireless router, modem, 3 pc downstairs). Down stairs I can't ping past the modem, even though I checked box on modem config to allow PING.
My biggest problem now is that I need to print to downstairs to a printer shared off of one of the workstations. Being on a different LAN, computers are not in the same workgroup. At least i can't see the downstairs workgroup when I explore the MIcrosoft Windows Network. If I add printer, then add internet printer, and type in the LAN address of the Computer with the printer attached as well as the name of the printer will this work
(hxxp://192.168.1.46/printers/hp1300)? I will try tomorrow and post back the results. Any thoughts any body on networking printers?

Can't figure out the downstairs printer. It is shared by an XP computer that can be pinged from the wireless side. But the laptops will not print to it. I have tried adding it thru the wizard, adding a new port, uninstalled - reinstalled drivers on both computers with no luck. Short of biting the bullet and getting a network printer(one with a NIC) does anybody have any suggestions??

From the Laptop When you go to Start>run and put in the IP address of the computer with the Printer what do you get ? if you see the printer there right click and add .
Also can you post ipconfig results from the computer that has the printer on it and the wireless laptop ?
