Hello all,
I been trying to optimize my network settings, because sometimes my connection is a little slow. Well haven't gotten anywhere with it really.
Just wondering: When I use the ping utility from the command prompt I get times ranging anywhere from 25 to 125 ms pinging various sites. This seems a bit slow. If i ping my router I consistently get 10ms. If my memory serves me correctly I used to get 1ms pinging my router and 10 to 25 ms pinging www sites.
I have cable internet and standard ethernet running cat 5 cable.
Just wondering what could be wrong.
Thanx
Jim

make sure there are no kinks in the cable, when the cable is bent into s small circle or knot, btw how long is the cable?

My coax cable is coming from the attic. It's not too long 20' maybe. It does have multiple splitters going to a couple of tv's though. I'll check for kinks in that. My cat 5 cable is maybe 6' for the one puter and maybe 20' to the other puter. I seem to get slower than usual data tranfers between the two pc's, but not consistently slow. But anyway could the splitters be ccausing a bottleneck?
Thanx
Jim

Just a note: It probably takes longer to ping a www site because it's farther away and perhaps more traffice on the network as compared to your house.

Coax is rated 10 to 100Mbps while Cat 5 is rated 10 to 500Mbps.

You mentioned "splitters" Well...they split signals. Install a switch between the devices.
