I have a Dell Inspirion 4000 laptop running Windows XP. I am connected through a home network. The other 2 computers in my home work fine but my laptop doesn't. My local area connection shows that it is connected but I cannot connect to the internet. When I try to repair the connection I get this message:
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:Failed to query TCP\IP settings of the connection.

What can I try to fix this problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Try This...

Repairing the Winsock and TCP stack on XP

Windows XP provides several commands to repair issues with the TCP protocol stack. The commands increase in the degree that they are likely to impact other software on the system, so it is best to progress through them one at a time to limit the other software that has to be reinstalled or repaired afterwards.

First try, "netsh winsock reset catalog" in a command window. If that doesn't work, try "netsh winsock reset" and finally try "netsh int ip reset". All three of these commands should be run in a command window.

In the command window I entered "netsh winsock reset catalog" and got this message:
Successfully reset the winsock catalog.
You must restart the machine in order complete the reset.

So I restarted and it didn't fix anything.
Then I tried "netsh winsock reset" and got the same message as above.

Lastly, I entered "netsh int ip reset" and got this message:
One or more essential parameters were not entered.
Verify the required parameters, and reenter them.
The syntax supplied for this command is not valid. Check help for the correct syntax.
Usage: reset [name=]<string>
Parameters:
tag value
name -the name of a file to which to append information regarding what settings were reset.
Remarks: resets TCP\IP and related components to a clean state.
Example:
reset resetlog.txt

So I don't know what that means or what to do.
When I check the status of my local area connection, the support tab shows nothing. No address type, no IP address, no subnet mask, and no default gateway.

It needs to be typed like this:

netsh int ip reset ip_reset.txt

I recommend this little program(it's free). It has got me out of trouble before:

VBwinsockfix. You can get it here:

Typed "netsh int ip reset ip_reset.txt" in command window and got nothing.
Tried the program, didn't fix anything. I'm still not connecting to the internet.
Any other suggestions?

This might help with regards to the Msinfo32 program and the Netdiag tool

I have one more simple suggestion. Go to the properties of your NIC/connection. Untick the TCP/IP protocol and reboot. Go back into properties and re-tick the tcp/ip protocol and run the netsh int ip reset ip_reset.txt command. Another reboot and hopefully you'll be OK. Other than that I would start suspecting the drivers for your NIC or the device itself. By the way can you ping 127.0.0.1?

Tried all this and still nothing. I cannot ping 127.0.0.1. I get the message "Unable to ping ip drive, error code 2."

Has this machine ever worked on the network? Have installed or deinstalled anything recently? Have you tried a system restore?

Yes it has worked before. I didnt change, install or uninstall anything. This issue has only started happening this past week. I'll try a restore now. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to take it some place to get it fixed.

This program worked like a charm! It fixed it all after hours of trying so many things I cannot even list them all here.

The issue I had was the Mcafee Firewall was left as a service but there was nothing installed. I removed it and lost my connection because it left some type of rules behind. I had another anti-virus program I could not uninstall no matter what I did (add/remove pgms, edit the registry, forget it!)

This application from Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup did the trick

Let me please note that program posted by Sparker was the golden ticket!!

Spaker,

I have to tell you I saved that gem of a program.

When I went to install the Panda firewall just the action of running the installer lost the connection again. Well, no problem ran the little fix'er upper and all was well again.

Thank you,
Patrick
