Bad CS: S Performance
Hey guys, im new here, been looking for a good PC forums website and i think i found it, but anyway. I enjoy playing CS: S and i dont enjoy lagging (no suprise there right?) so anyway i dont feel that i should be getting about 23FPS just running around on CS.
My Specs are: Microsoft Windows Xp Pro SP2 Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz 1GB RAM 230 GB HDD Ati All-in-Wonder 9600 Series grafx card ----------------------------------------------- i have XP tuned for best performance, all CS video settings as low as they can be..umm thats basically all, i dont think i deserve this lag x.x any help or ideas would be appreciated Also, i have downloaded Everest like i saw someone do in another thread, so if need be i have no problem copying some of the info you need from it, thanks! |

Hey, actually i read that post above about the ATI Grafx card tip and it seems like that describes my problem and explains it seeing how i have an All-In-Wonder 9600 the fps is good at 1st and then after a few minutes it decreases hugely so i got the ATI Tray Tools, and i go to Hardware -> Overclock Settings -> Fan, and i get this window that doesnt say much besides "no supported hardware found" but heres a pic:

Just means your graphics card does not support fan controlling.
Basic things to try - Updating video card drivers, Motherboard drivers. - Update Directx to the latest release. - Clean up your system, run anti - spyware / anti virus etc. - Defrag your HDD. Download SpeedFan and post back your temps. www.almico.com/speedfan.php |

Thanks for your response, here are the screenshots from the program you had me download, i don't know much about temperatures, but i do know i only have 2 fans on my comp. Well here are the screenshots.
This is one from before gaming: ![]() and here is one of about 10 minutes of playing cs:s

Ehh can't really read properly them cos they are real small.
But it looks like the second one shows one temp is at 92C, and another 72C?? Looks like your problem may be overheating. Open up the case and make sure there is no dust on the heatsink, and make sure the fan is spinning. |

![]() degrees: 88f 198f 262f 119f 108f Well here ya go, i dont know much about temperatures of computers, but im assuming since its 262f my comp should be like about to blow up shouldnt it lol. I only have 2 fans on my Pc currently, and my friend said they suck so maybe i should like get a new case or something? what can i do to fix this problem? Its causing huge problemz. |

I think temp2 is just a mis-read sensor or non existant. My system shows one constantly at the same temp of -128C which is obviously not true.
But the others seem to be correct. I would take the side of your computer off, and get a big fan blowing into it to keep it cool. Make sure the heatsink is secured on properly aswell. Also you may want to buy a better heatsink, and some artic silver thermal compound. |

hehe or you could get into some modding and buy a few fans at a comp store or online, measure them out one the side of the case cut some holes in the side and mount the fans in the side :-D THAT IS ALWAYS FUN! I like modding things makes me feel all warm inside.

lol, truthfully i have never built a computer, and i dont even know what all the parts are and where they all are, but i thought the heatsink was under my processor right? And how do i tell if its on all the way or right? Also, next year im taking an IT Essentials class which is like taking apart and building computers supposedly. I am kind of hesitant to mod out a pc when i really dont know what im doing, but right now i am going to go get a fan and point it in the case and then let you guys know of the status later on. Thanks for your suggestions!

i opened up the side of my case and put up a floor fan right in front of it and it was working fine on CS, was getting about 50fps from the start and stayed around there for about the hour i was playing for, but i know im capable of 100fps since thats what it used to be running on with my 1st 2 minutes of CS then it got too hot and went to 50, 30, 20, and then like 10. So i gues i need to buy bigger fans? Im only using 2 fans, which say '3x25' on them whatever that means. Thanks!

Get one for the back of your case, blowing out. If you have one of those big fans you use to cool you down in the summer point it into your computer with the side off, that should keep it cool until you add some extra case fans.
The heatsink is ontop of the processor. Its the big chunk of metal that sits ontop of it, with a fan mounted to it. Make sure there is no dust in the fins of the heatsink, and that the heatsink is on straight. If it looks abit wobbly, then tighten its screws. |
