I needed to defragment my PC and was told the fastest way was to start the pc in easy mode by holding down the Ctrl key, ever since I did this the PC has gone into scandisk on startup. It's driving us mad as it looks as if the second bit could take hours. Can anyone tell me how to stop this happening?

On the ScanDisk panel, have you checked 'thorough scan' ?
If so, uncheck for normal surface scan.
ScanDisk can be turned off at boot, but it is not recommended.

The scandisk box is ticked at standard. On startup it goes onto the blue screen with the yellow progress bar and then when that is conplete it goes onto the thorough scandisk error check but with very basis black and white type graphics/writing

Hi
Go to Accesories --> System tools --> System Information --> Tools --> System configuration utility
There you will find an option to let Windows always run Scandisk at startup. Uncheck if it is accidentally checked.
If not checked check it and restart then go back and uncheck and restart, this might help.
Another apparent reason for scandisk running always at startup is the Hard disk developing bad sectors.
