Startup items??

A friend has requested my help. Her system is slow starting up and I beleive that part of the problem is that two programs are slowing it down.
Both "Windows Live Messanger and VoipStunt" seem to take a long time "settling" down.
Are these two required at start up or can they be started manually when required?????
Any advice will be appreciated.

you can turn both off, you can always turn them back on if they affect the computer.
