Hi there, Yes you will have to purchase something, its called a PC card. Its nothing like a PCI card that you find in most desktop pcs, this card its about the same size has a bank keycard, if not a little bigger. These cards u can from a telstra store at your local major shopping centre or from optus, from basically any ISP (Internet Service Provider) These ISPs include, Telstra with their Bigpond range, optus with their optusnet range or even onthenet and many more. Basically the only thing you have to decide is if you want to be on a contract or if you don't want to and also on the speed of internet you would like. Some of these ISPs don't charge for modem or internet upgrades. (Please refer to one of the companies above for more information). See how you go. But really its something that you have to decide on. I can give you advice before purchasing one, but i really can't tell you which one to get. See how you go if you need anything else please let me know.

not sure what you are asking, internet access is no different between a large city or a small town. You can access the internet through your isp via cable or wireless (if you purchase a wireless router).

You do not have to purchase anything for your laptop, not even a card if your laptop already has wifi ability.

If the city, hotel, coffee shop has wifi available then all you have to do is to connect to it with any settings it may require.

IMO, continue to connect to (not dialup) wire. Its faster than wireless. Use wireless if you need your laptop outside of the home and hotspots are available or have more than one computer.
