I am trying to download Windows Media Player and a problem arose" not enough disk space" another 5 mb is needed, yet I have 60 GB free on D drive and 59 mb free on E drive that is called a swap file.I don't seem to have the option to download it onto D drive (where there should be plenty of space) I have no idea where it is trying to download it.For some reason I don't have a C drive.

I had trouble with my hard drive (was called C) it kept diplaying..hard drive is corrupt and about to give up.This was caused apparently by a few bad files.the drive was wiped clean and windows installed ,it was thought that a partition would solve the problem of the "about to give up ,display" so the drive is now called D and the partition is called a Swap File E ,this contains my program files and is 2 gb in size, though there is only 25 mb free.Every time I try to download something like a windows update ,I get the pop up...not enough disk space for the download.I thought that if I cleared some room, this would solve the problem and I tried to move folders like Docs and Settings that are 378 mb in size and they in turn contain folders that I already have in my D drive,so they are duplicated. These folders are Favourites
Administrator All Users My Documents Desktop Start Menu User Data .It seems that most downloads want to put their files in E which is already overcrowded ,hence my reason to shift them. All efforts to shift them are blocked as they are program files.

Well it sounds like things got off to a bad start right off. The partitioning and formatting
went bad somehow. C: sound be there and it's obviously not.
1 - What did you use (program-wise) to do the partitioning and formatting?
2 - What O/S are we talking about?

Sorry ,no idea what program was used for the partitioning it was done by someone else who I assumed was knowledgeable about the procedure, not someone I know ,more of a friend of my daughters friend at work!My o/s is windows 2000 Professional.Hopefully you can unravel this mystery for me,as the E drive is 12% fragmented and there is not enough free space..only 1%,to use on defrag which isn't enough. The hard drive was constantly showing to be in imminent danger of failing so that was why the drive was cleared and windows re entered.

Just an addition to my reply, the C drive was shown on one occaision ,as a spare drive,it appeared, when I put a cd in the drive and it was shown in my computer as, being in c drive!

First thing to do is test the hard drive with the manufacturer's test utility (program).
Everest will show you the drive manufacturer. In Everest it's under
Storage
ATA
Device Description is on top on the right.

I can see the specification by everest which doesn't mention any fault. The manufacturer Seagate device description of the device ST380011A(5JVRZQAQ) their site did not show any test utility program that I could find. Can I assume that the Everest diagnosis ,by not mentioning any fault with the hard drive ,as was the case previously ,which caused the drive to be partitioned due to the warning this site gave on that occaision ,means that the hard drive is 0k?

Seagate test utility here (http://download.seagate.com/seatools/registration.nsf/eula/desktop).
edit:
Everest is not used as a device tester it's only for identification of items.
