Smile IE v.5.00

Appreciate some assistance.

Helping someone who is running Internet Explorer
v.5.00 (5.00.2919.6304) and is having some problems.

The Dial-Up-Connection prompt sometimes keeps coming up, no matter whether or not a connection to the Internet is needed, and no matter how many times you cancel the bugger.

Any suggestions?

It could be some software trying to check for an update. I suggest a firewall like ZoneAlarm that can monitor what is trying to dial out. If you know what's trying to dial out you can sometimes go into the software options to disable automatic updates.

It would also be a good idea to make sure to do a virus scan with updated software or online with a service like Trend Micro's Housecall and install a spyware catcher like Ad-Aware or Spybot.

Does it come up at random intervals or at startup only?

Do you have the "automatically connect to the Internet" box checkmarked on the Dial Up box? If yes, uncheck that box and see what happens. Remember to reboot immediately after unchecking.

Hi FZWG - do they have Zone Alarm installed? If so try updating it to the latest version. There was a bug in 3.1.395 (I think I have the version number correct).

From the Faq's for that version.

Why is ZoneAlarm causing my computer to dial out?

ZoneAlarm is performing a DNS lookup. Normally, ZoneAlarm waits until a user has established an Internet connection before performing the DNS lookup. However, an issue with the most recent ZoneAlarm Pro/Plus and ZoneAlarm releases is that they don't wait for an Internet connection before performing the DNS lookup. On some computers with auto-dialers set up, this look-up may cause the auto-dialer to be invoked. We will correct this in the next release of the products.

7. Why is ZoneAlarm performing a DNS lookup?

ZoneAlarm products perform automatic DNS lookups on any service addresses that a user requests for that session (registration, check-for-update), as well as for any Zone Labs Web destinations a user may go to. In addition to this, when a user adds a new Web site to a Zone, ZoneAlarm does a DNS lookup for that site. But if the DNS name cannot be resolved before the session is over, ZoneAlarm tries again the next session until the information can be established.

If you are confident that the problem has nothing to do with Zone Alarm, go to here and download Startup List to a floppy. Run it on the PC with a problem. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread

Thanks for the replies.

The problem happens at Startup, and sometimes at random.

Scanned for viruses several times, also using HouseCall, and so far, so good. No viruses.

Was going to give Spybot a whirl next.

The DUC is not set to dial automatically.

The version of IE these folks have is also an older one.

Was thinking about replacing it also, however, don't know if version 5.0 has to be totaly uninstalled thru CP before installing IE 6.0 (have CD For IE 6.0).
