Bt Broadband problem
Hi all
I'm having problems getting online since i tried to switch from ethernet to USB. I ran the bt broadband install disc entered all the details correctly, clicked 'connect using USB', it all went smoothly, it asked me to restart the computer now everything was installed, so i did.. Upon restarting, the disc said that it couldn't detect an internet connection, so i checked the green lights on the voyager, and a couple of lights that should have been on were off, so i made sure all the wires were in correctly (one wasn't, but after fiddling with the wires, all the lights turned on) so i ran the disc again, it welcomed me back, i clicked 'next' and it took me to the next step (the step before it tests my internet connection) i tried to click next again, but it didn't do anything, i waited for a good half hour to see if it was just slow, but nothing..Someone suggested i uninstall bt broadband, so the disc could start from the beginning again, so i did, but still no luck, it always 'welcomes me back' At the moment, my internet is set up to use an ethernet, i can't seem to change that. I think it would help if i could just start the bt broadband disc from the beginning again, at the moment whenever i start it, it welcomes me back, but then keeps freezing on the second 'next' Is there a way i can start the disc from the beginning? The other comp in the house previously connected via USB, and changed last night to ethernet with no problems, didn't even need the bt install disc, it connected straight away. Can anyone help me please, it's been like this since last night, i'm having to use the other pc at the mo to post here, but i have no clue how to fix my internet.. How old is the disc? I suggest that either you install it manually (there are guides around, myself I'm not sure of how to) or download the install from another computer with Internet and install it from desktop.
If it's an old disc it may not work with current network structures, and that could be messing you up. |

I managed to fix it eventually, not sure how long for though.. i copied all the internet files from the other computer, to this one, and it worked. The only problem though, now i don't seem to have my own sign in, eg: when i used to click Bt yahoo browser, my name was there, and i could save my password etc, now there are just 'other users'.. is there any way to change that? Secondly my internet seems to be slower than it used to be, which is odd considering i switched to usb.. does anyone know the reason for this?
And Zheepeez, the disc is fairly new, never had problems with it before =) |

Has anyone got any ideas?
My internet is much slower than it used to be when it connected via ethernet, i'm sure transferring the files was only a temporary fix, as it seems to be floored. Everything is dramatically slower, for example, I was going to download Bt desktop help, there was a little message stating the download would take 3 minutes on a broadband connection, however mine took 29. I ran an internet speed test on desktop help, it came back saying my internet was slower than expected, i followed all the suggestions, but still the same. The problems are probably caused by the fact i just copied and pasted the files to this comp, so nothing is really installed, but as a said, i can't seem to start the broadband disc from the beginning, so that was my only option. Is there a way i can get the install files i need from the other comp, but actually install it on this one, instead of copy and paste? Or is there a way i can download bt browser, so i can overwrite the existing files? . Could really do with some help..Edit: it's been a while and no response, hate to be impatient, but really, no suggestions? I plugged the ethernet cable in earlier to see if it gave me a faster connection, no luck.I ran a speed test again, outcome was 0.06mb... i'm not a comp whizz, but i'm pretty sure thats bad. I've looked all over for answers, but in the end, my hope lies here. What has changed?? why did my internet go down the plug hole when i tried to switch to usb?? could it be the transfered files that are causing all the problems?? how can i start the Bt Broadband disc from the beginning?? Is there a way i can install the internet files on my comp, instead of copy and paste, if so, how?? why hasn't the other computer been affected?? .... Eagerly awaiting a response.. Hi
Have you tried resetting the router? I would also revert back to ethernet as I believe it to be quicker than USB for transferring data.

Thanks for your response Mr Bean
How would I go about resetting the router? and unfortunately the other comp in the house belongs to someone else, and the ethernet cable is long enough to reach their computer, but the usb isn't, which is why I had to switch (it wasn't by choice trust me i'm going to run a speed test on the other comp in a mo, i'll post the outcome. ![]() Outcome was the same, 0.131mb, which is what mine is now. I'm on 8meg, so what's an acceptable speed? what should I be getting? I live 2 miles away from the exchange. Last edited by Quintrix; March 31st, 2007 at 03:38 PM. |

You should be running 8mb. There will be a small hole in the back of it with a reset switch. Push a paper clip or something like it into the hole and press the button. Hold it down for about 10-15 seconds and release. That should return in to the factory settings. If that doesn't work phone BT and tell them they are a bunch of arse and to sort it out. That's what you pay for old mate

Lol thanks Mr Bean, reset the router, speed still the same at the moment, but I read somewhere that it can take up to 3 days for it to stabilize, so I'll retest then. Thanks for the help dude. If this doesn't work, i'll probably switch to Virgin 10meg, hopefully it'll be more stable.
Another weird thing that I think is related to the deterioration in internet speed is, now I can't seem to play my regular online games, eg Swat4, & Raven shield, it freezes up just before it should show the multiplayer servers. Now i've reset the router, I might give it another try. Thanks Mr.

Just to satisfy my curiosity what speed does it say in your connection settings?
START>MY COMPUTER>VIEW NETWORK PLACES>NETWOK CONNECTIONS. Double click your connection and post back the speed.

What router are you using? Home hub or one of the voyagers?
Have you got microfilters installed everywhere in the house where there are phones/faxes/sky tv etc? and how did you get that speed you mentioned? |

Resetting the router fixed my problem with not being able to play the online games, thanks
I checked my speed in the network connections panel, it says 12.0mbps.G Dem - I have 1 microfilter hooked up, thats all thats needed i think, its plugged into the phone socket thing in the wall, and the housephone and internet wire are connected to it. I have a voyager 2091. And I ran a few speed tests, one from the BT desktop help, health checks, one from patmedia, and a couple online. The speed i posted here though, was from patmedia. http://speedtest.patmedia.net/ Connection still the same at the moment, but i'm gonna keep testing over the next couple of days. Edit: My bad, the speed I posted here was from Bt Desktop Help, but I ran a speedtest on Patmedia also, it came back saying download speed: 244kbps upload speed: 347kbps.
